What is a nostril correction?

↓ Directly to before/after photos ↓

A nostril correction offers a solution when the nostrils show an abnormal shape. This often involves a wide base at the upper lip, or nostrils that are too large and/or visible. The nostrils can be narrowed in these cases, as long as the function is preserved. The nostrils can also be too floppy or suck inward when inhaling. Then we speak of a nasal valve that is too narrow.

Possibilities

The nostrils and/or nostrils may be made smaller through small incisions to the side of the nostrils to remove skin. Sometimes the nostrils need to be strengthened to prevent them from closing when breathing in. This is usually done with a piece of cartilage from the septum.

The treatment

The treatment process consists of several steps, starting with a free consultation in which we discuss your wishes. During this consultation it is possible to use a 3D computer simulation.

If the treatment is on its own (i.e. nothing else is needed), then the procedure can take place under local anesthesia as a “minor rhinoplasty.” Beforehand, it will be discussed whether incisions will be made in the furrow next to the nostrils and/or in the part between the nostrils (columella). If the rhinoplasty is done in combination with other procedures on the nose, anesthesia may be required (major rhinoplasty). This is always discussed with you in advance.

Aftercare and recovery for nostril correction

As for all other procedures on the nose, you may cool with frozen peas (or cold pack) for 5 minutes every hour up to and including the day after the procedure (does not have to be overnight). Swelling and bruising are usually not tremendously bad because only soft tissue is involved, not bone or cartilage.

If dissolvable sutures were used, you may cut them short to the skin after 2 weeks. If the sutures are not soluble then they will be removed after about 1 week at our practice. As long as there are stitches present it is best to be careful not to tear the wound open (2 weeks no sports). The scars will look red in the first weeks, which will gradually fade in the following months.
